i was looking at realists like Andrew Wyeth, and observed their earth tones to depict light. Earth tones give the 'realistic' look, the grittiness of harsh light.
next i would like to look more into impressionism, which is practically the opposite; using contrasting vibrant colors to depict 'reality' to give a more transcendent feel.
